A medieval-themed festival that heralds spring and occurs every first Thursday, Friday, and Saturday following May 1. This lively event features two rival teams: the Nobilissima Parte de Sopra representing the upper city and the Magnifica Parte de Sotto representing the lower city, vying for the prestigious Palio prize. The teams engage in friendly competition through elaborate parades in authentic medieval attire, dramatic recitations, and joyful singing and dancing along the ancient streets and squares of the city. During the festival, three candles bearing statues of St. Ubaldo, St. Giorgio, and St. Antonio are carried through Gubbio's historic streets in a thrilling race. The day begins with the solemn 'raising' of the Ceri in Piazza Grande, where participants gather for the spirited race up to Mount Ingino's basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The race, marked by skilled maneuvers and exhilarating moments, culminates in a joyous celebration where locals and visitors revel in traditional music, dance, and culinary delights, immersing themselves in Gubbio's cherished cultural heritage.
